Grandma's Beef or Brown Stew - I really love this one from an old Rhodesian Cookery book now know as Zimbabwe! Nostalgia!


This is my favourite way of making brown stew.


This recipe came out of an old Rhodesian Cookbook – Known as Zimbabwe today.

The Original book – Recipe Number 5

Ingredients:
1.5 lb stewing beef cubed (Brisket, chuck or blade or any other you prefer)
30 ml fat
1 Liter boiling water
5 ml lemon juice
5 ml Worcester sauce
1 garlic clove, minced
1 onion (medium), chopped
2 bay leaves
5 ml salt
2.5ml pepper (Any you wish)
2.5 ml paprika
dash allspice
6 carrots, quartered
3 onions, quartered
12 small potatoes
chopped green peppers (1 – 2)
Frozen peas, Half a 1kg package
Method:
Brown beef in fat in heavy pan.
Combine with water, lemon juice, Worcester sauce, garlic, onion, bay leaves, salt, pepper, paprika and allspice.
Simmer until meat is really tender then add carrots, onions, potatoes and green peppers and simmer for 15 minutes.
Add peas and simmer a further 15 minutes longer.
